Kids Dentistry Services
It All Begins with a Healthy Smile! Milford Dental Care is a family-friendly practice that welcomes parents and their children. Dr. Seguin typically starts seeing children around the age of 5. Our office provides general dentistry services for children, as well as early interceptive orthodontics. To help make your child’s visit fun, we have freshly baked cookies in our lobby, as well as a children’s nook with coloring books and a television.
Your Child’s First Visit
Dr. Seguin understands that you want the best for your child. At Milford Dental Care, we focus on providing the highest quality pediatric dental care possible. It’s completely normal for a child to be unsure about their first dental visit, but with our friendly staff and home-like environment, they don’t have to be! Our office is designed for patient comfort, and we are happy to provide little ones with tours prior to their appointment.
Does your child suck his or her thumb? Has early tooth loss changed their bite? Our early bite assessments allow us to help your child avoid bite complications later on, such as impacted teeth or overbites. This can even prevent the need to wear braces.
Protective Dental Sealants
Protective dental sealants are thin coats of plastic painted onto your child’s back teeth to prevent the accumulation of bacteria in the deep grooves and depressions of the molars. Studies show that 88% of cavities in American school-aged children are caused by food and bacteria being caught in rear molars.
At Milford Dental Care, we typically apply a protective sealant to your child’s premolars and molars. The sealant lasts several years, but we will continue to check it during your child’s regular dental appointments.
Tooth Colored Fillings
At Milford Dental Care, we offer highly accurate cavity detection with safe CariVu technology. Treatment for cavities in children depends on the severity of decay, as well as the child’s age and oral environment. We typically treat cavities with discreet, effective tooth-colored fillings.
Dental crowns are tooth-shaped coverings cemented to a badly damaged tooth to restore the shape and functionality of the tooth. Dr. Seguin may recommend a crown for your child’s tooth if it has a large cavity, was broken or chipped due to trauma, or if the tooth hasn’t developed correctly.
Unfortunately, sometimes a child’s tooth may be too badly decayed to save. In this case, Dr. Seguin will perform an extraction. An extraction may also be recommended if the tooth is severely fractured or is crowding other healthy teeth.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentists (AAPD) advises that children be seen for a checkup every 6 months. These visits allow your child’s dentist to closely monitor new changes in their mouth and ensure that you, as a parent, have the information you need to promote continued oral health in your child. Dr. Seguin may suggest additional checkups if your child is more susceptible to cavities, or if your child is showing signs of orthodontic problems.
If your child is anxious, has special needs, or just needs extra help staying calm and comfortable, Dr. Seguin may recommend nitrous oxide. Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a safe way to help children receive the dental care they need without anxiety or fear. Once your child’s treatment is over, the gas will be completely out of their system after just a few minutes. At Milford Dental Care, our goal is to always care for your child’s dental health in the safest way possible.
Your child might need a space maintainer if they lose a tooth early or have a baby tooth extracted. Space maintainers keep the space from a lost tooth open in order to allow the permanent tooth to erupt properly. If your child needs a space maintainer, Dr. Seguin will custom make it to fit your child’s mouth.
Baby teeth are vital to the healthy development of adult teeth and facial structure. In certain cases, if a space maintainer is not used, your child’s other teeth can shift into the open space–causing the need for more invasive orthodontic treatment in the future.
Dental fluoride treatments are safe and effective in decreasing the amount of cavities in children. Dr. Seguin often recommends fluoride treatments along with dental sealants to protect your child’s teeth. Fluoride acts as a shield for the tooth’s outer enamel and can actually reverse early dental decay in some children.
Not all wisdom teeth need to be extracted – but some do. In many situations, it’s best to pull the wisdom teeth before they jeopardize the smile as a whole. If the eruption of the wisdom teeth will cause damage to neighboring teeth, or if the teeth cannot fully erupt, we may consider extraction.
We will take a panoramic radiograph of your entire jaw, so we can see the size, location, and developmental stage of the wisdom teeth in consideration. At the earliest, wisdom teeth are removed in the mid-teen years, but 3rd molars do not finish developing until closer to about 30 years of age.
