We all want to have healthy teeth and gums from our earliest years to our latest. Maintaining healthy oral habits such as regular brushing, flossing, and rinsing can go a long way in making this a reality. It’s important to understand that, even with proper at-home care, seeing a dentist regularly for examinations, cleanings, and necessary dental procedures are crucial to keeping your teeth and gums in a healthy state. The doctors of Milford Dental and Associates in Highland, MI provide a safe and comfortable approach to an effective dental experience to patients looking to maintain proper oral health and hygiene.

Importance of Preventative Dentistry

Many people avoid the dentist and will only go in once they are in significant pain due to a cavity or other dental crisis. The unfortunate fact is that nobody needs to get to that point if they are combining proper dental hygiene at home with regular dental visits. Preventive dental includes services such as ADA (American Dental Association) recommended twice a year dental exams and cleanings. These regular dental visits are essential if you wish to maintain healthy teeth and gums. It is in between those visits that you should be keeping up healthy practices at home. For some, a dentist may even request more frequent visits if any dental issues may need to be checked up on sooner.

What Happens During a Routine Dental Visit?

Having your teeth checked for decay is just one component of a thorough dental exam. In addition, your dentist should be checking the health of your gums and inside of your mouth for any potential problems (such as oral cancer). Don’t be surprised if your dentist also performs a checkup on your neck and head as well as your temporomandibular joints. This is not something that is always checked, but it is a definite possibility. Your teeth will then be cleaned, and any issues expressed to you by your dentist including stressing the importance of continuing to provide proper care to your mouth, teeth, and gums at home. A clinical dental examination will include many, if not all of the following steps:

  • An examination of the gums checking for any sign of gum disease
  • Checking for cavities, decay, loose teeth, and your bite
  • An examination of the tissue inside of your mouth
  • An examination of your tongue
  • Checking for broken teeth or damaged fillings
  • An evaluation of any dental appliances you may have in place
  • X-rays
