Common Dental Issues That Result in Young Children Visiting the Dentist

Finding a dentist who is good with your children is critical when seeking a dentist for your family. At Milford Dental Care in Highland, Michigan, Dr. Jill Seguin and her friendly team welcome children aged five or older. The entire team at Milford Dental Care works hard to create a family atmosphere that not only allows every member of the family to feel right at home but helps minimize any nerves the youngest of your family may have about seeing a dentist. Here are some common children’s dental services which may have you bringing your kids into the office.

Tooth Decay

Cavities in a young child’s tooth caused by decay are the most common dental issue among children in the United States. Because many children are not properly brushing and flossing (without supervision), their teeth are more likely to develop a cavity. This is made more prevalent by children who are on a sugar-heavy diet. Decay is created when plaque, a sticky substance that builds up on teeth, produces an acid that eats at the tooth’s enamel. This is what causes decay and cavities. It is encouraged that parents supervise and assist their children with brushing and flossing until they can fully grasp the process and do it on their own.

Tooth Sensitivity

A child can be easily distracted and lose focus on daily activities, such as school, when a tooth causes discomfort.

This distracting sensitivity can be due to several underlying factors. Making sure you bring your child in for their twice-a-year checkup will make it easier for their dentist to diagnose the underlying cause for sensitivity. Issues that can lead to tooth sensitivity in young children include:

  • Tooth decay
  • Newly erupted permanent teeth
  • Enamel wear caused by acid erosion
  • Bruxism, or constant teeth grinding
  • A missing or cracked filling

Several treatments can help reduce discomfort brought out by tooth sensitivity. Seeing the dentist right away can keep the issue from getting worse.
